devtober 2025 - day 0

the jam

Just over a year ago, I joined my first game jam - GBA Jam 2024. Since then I've tried to take part in other game jams, but life events and work have gotten in the way.

However, I was recently made redundant and so have a lot of time on my hands, when not looking for work, where I can learn skills I want to learn and take part in things I want to participate in. While looking through game jams on itch, I came across the Devtober 2025 jam which interested me, as the goal of the jam isn't creating a specific type or theme of game, but building good habits and discipline to help finish projects.

why a blog

One of the suggestions for the jam is making frequent progress posts on social media, but I've decided to create a blog to post my progress on which I may cross-post to other sites.

I decided on a blog so that I have a centralised place to post my ideas, which I can then link to on any other platforms that I use, and it also gives me the option to better format posts with markdown syntax along with the ability to post long form content if I desire.

the plan for today

The jam is set to start today at 23:00 BST, so I have the rest of the day to figure out what my plan is, and what tools I'm going to be using to make my game. I've recently been working through the MonoGame 2D tutorial, so that's most likely going to be the framework that I choose.

I'll probably include a lot more details about the jam and my progress in my day 1 post, this post is mainly just to get my blog set up and ready to go.
